Labels made for real cosmetics packaging
Cosmetics labels have a harder job than ordinary product stickers. A lipstick label may rub inside a travel pouch, a bottle label may sit in a humid bathroom, and a compact label may be touched every time the customer opens the product. For these conditions, start with waterproof PP materials instead of indoor paper-type stocks.
For a premium beauty look, PP Matte White is the practical default. It gives a soft, non-shiny surface that works well for minimalist skincare-inspired makeup, brow products, powders, and boxed cosmetic lines. If you want a no-label look on a clear bottle or tube, choose PP Clear/Transparent, especially when the product color or packaging finish is part of the design. For bold color cosmetics, PP Glossy White can make saturated shades, swatches, and bright brand colors look more vibrant.
Which material should you choose?
| Packaging type | Suggested setup | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Retail cosmetic bottles | PP Matte White or PP Clear with permanent adhesive | Waterproof film helps when the bottle is handled near sinks or vanities. |
| Lip products and tubes | PP Matte White 2 or PP Glossy White 2 | Better choice for curved containers where edge lifting can happen. |
| Makeup compacts | PP Matte White with matte finish | Good for premium branding on smooth plastic surfaces that are touched often. |
| Sample packs and sachet-style promos | PP Matte White or PP Glossy White | Works for small labels where readability and brand color still matter. |
| Coated cosmetic cartons | PP Matte White or PP Glossy White with permanent adhesive | Useful for box labels, shade stickers, seals, and product information labels. |
Regular Satin and Hi-gloss are economical indoor materials, but they are not waterproof. Use them only when the label stays dry and flat, such as short-run box labels, display labels, or inserts. If the item may encounter humidity, oil from hands, rubbing in bags, or damp storage, PP waterproof materials are the safer choice.
Finish guide: matte, glossy, and specialty looks
Choose matte when your brand is clean, soft, clinical, luxury, or minimalist. Matte reduces shine and usually feels more understated on compacts, cartons, and neutral-toned bottles. Choose glossy when the product is playful, colorful, or shade-focused, such as lip tints, blushes, palettes, and bright retail packs.
For limited drops or PR kits, you may also request lamination looks such as holographic, broken glass, snow flakes, glitter, glossy, or matte. These should support the brand style, not overpower the required product information. For cost and suitability, request a quotation based on the size, quantity, material, and finish you want.
How to size cosmetics labels correctly
Before ordering, measure the actual container, not just the box mockup. For bottles and tubes, measure the straight wall height: this is the labelable area before the shoulder, curve, cap, crimp, or base begins. A label that crosses a curve is more likely to wrinkle or peel at the edges.
For wrap labels, measure the container circumference using a flexible tape, then subtract a small gap so the label edges do not overlap. Leave extra room for the seam, barcode or shade code area if needed, and any natural squeeze area on tubes. For compacts, palettes, and cartons, measure only the flat panel area where the sticker will sit. Avoid hinges, clasps, embossed logos, raised rims, and textured zones.
Small cosmetics often need very compact text. If the container is too small for complete product details, plan an outer box, leaflet, or secondary label layout and confirm what must appear on the container itself with FDA Philippines.
What can go wrong, and how to prevent it
- Peeling on curved tubes: use a material suited for curved containers, keep the label within the straight wall, and avoid oversizing the wrap.
- Humidity in bathrooms: choose waterproof PP Matte White, PP Glossy White, or PP Clear instead of non-waterproof indoor materials.
- Oil and frequent handling: use permanent adhesive on clean, dry plastic, glass, or coated carton surfaces before application.
- Scuffing in travel bags: choose a finish that matches the amount of handling expected, and avoid placing tiny text on high-rub edges.
- Fading or weak shelf impact: use 300 DPI artwork and select matte or glossy based on how your colors should appear in retail lighting.
Artwork checklist for cosmetics labels
- Send artwork as PDF, PNG, or AI at 300 DPI.
- Use readable text sizes, especially for ingredients, shade names, batch details, and dates.
- Keep important text away from cut lines, rounded corners, and wrap seams.
- For transparent labels, mark which areas should remain clear and check contrast against the actual container color.
- Typical label elements buyers ask about include product name and function, ingredient list, net content, country of manufacture, name and address of the company responsible, batch number, and manufacturing or expiry date.
- Cosmetics sold in the Philippines follow ASEAN Cosmetic Directive labelling requirements administered by FDA Philippines; confirm the current requirements with FDA Philippines before printing.
